What is virtualization?

There is hype out there about Virtualization but what exactly is it and what are its pros and cons? This techonology can offerlot of flexibility and cost savings for IT experts and software programmers.

Virtualization is a technique by which multiple machines can run on a single host computer. These virtual machines do support various operating systems, like Windows, Linux and UNIX.

Each virtual machine has its own parts(e.g., CPU, RAM, Hard Drive, etc) to simulate its physical copy. Many professionals are now using computers and have moved on to making use of VMware services. Server consolidation helps IT experts to use server resources completely, while segragating virtual machines and letting them work on other operating systems and applications.

Virtual machine technology is used by software developers to test applications on different operating system to avoid the stress of setting up one or more physical machines and to avoid the risk of causing problems when testing in a production environment. Virtualization software can be used on most platforms but you can always use the services provided by a VMware consulting business if you are unsure.

It is easy to create virtual machine instances once the software is installed because VM’s are merely a set of files located on the host machine. Virtual machine settings on the host computer are configured by the user. It is a highly usual custom to utilize the main image of a virtual machine along with the operating system and all necessary programs installed. The master image can be copied to multiple virtualization hosts so that these virtual machines can provide zero downtime and 100% reliability.

One of the most popular virtualization products available, VMWare, will soon have a free version of their product. Any organization can host virtual machines on Windows or Linux, but more serious businesses may want to use professional VMware consulting services.
