Tips on how to order Thyroid levels.
Thyroid levels include T3, T4, and TSH in the body. T3 and T4 circulate in the blood bound and linked to molecules of protein. The free T4 and free T3 defines the bodys true thyroid levels.. Thyroid levels of free hormone act as the hormone present to react with receptors of cells in the body.
In hypothyroidism, blood thyroid levels are low.. Excess TSH is released by the pituitary gland and thyroid levels of TSH rise. Thyroid tests are analyzed when the hypothalamus orders the pituitary to stop releasing TSH when in hyperthyroidism and TSH levels are low. Patients with abnormal thyroid levels or thyroid function may have normal TSH levels in beginning stages of dysfunctional thyroid. For this reason, a FT4 and FT3 determination must be ran.
T3 is only produced in small amounts by the thyroid gland. The liver produces the majority of T3 available in the body because of the of T4 to T3 conversion.
For the patient, what does all of this mean? A high TSH result often means an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism. A low TSH result can indicate an overactive thyroid gland, or hyperthyroidism.
