English Springer Spaniels - Wonderful Dogs, Constant Companions

English Springer Spaniels are extremely smart and learn very quickly. Being highly enthusiastic, eager to please, loyal, affectionate, and people-oriented makes the Springer an ideal companion for both city and country life. They are energetic and playful animals, and many owners find humor in their play. Springers are excellent all around dogs. Good training can bring excellent results in many fields, including agility, tracking, retrieving, obedience, hunting, and field trials. They are the perfect choice for families because they are so wonderful with children. Adult supervision of children around any breed of dog is necessary to ensure the dog doesn’t become irritated.

The Springer brand of dogs are generally friendly and always looking to make their owners happy. Some people have compared their temperament to the popular Golden Retriever. They are happy to just be with their family even if that means just lying around the house. Human contact helps them to adjust and adapt to different levels of activity. Springer Spaniels are incredibly affectionate! We know this from experience. As breeders, we have raised a lot of puppies and can absolutely testify to this fact.

As a breed, the English Springer Spaniel is a medium sized sporting dog, and can weigh anywhere from 35-55 pounds at adulthood. Springers can remain in good health most of their lives which can span 10 to 14 years. Springers which are field bred have shorter hair and are generally more active than the show type Springers. Field bred Springers have docked tails, but their tails are docked longer than the show Springers so their tails are still functional as an alert signal while hunting.

The coat colors for English Springer Spaniels comes in either two combinations of black and white or liver and white. There does exist a tri-color combination in the breed where the coat is black, liver, and white, but it is much more rare and generally requires both the sire and dam to be tri-color also. They are also known for having a white blaze on their faces usually down the middle.

Bred to be natural hunter, English Springer Spaniels, have alot of energy so you can expect them to enjoy running aroung, sniffing out “game” and retrieving things for you. Springers love the water and would enjoy spending the entire day outside with their owners as they are not especially affected by weather. Springers have been popular as pets and working dogs for a very long time. This is because they are an extremely old and well-established breed. These canines are often regarded as one of the oldest and best established gun dog and hunting breeds.
